The largest spider by mass is the Goliath birdeater. With a leg span reaching up to 28 cm (11 in), these spiders are found in the rain forest regions of Northern South America and can weigh up to 170 g (6.0 oz). Females live between 15 to 25 years whereas the males have a much shorter average life span of 3 to 6 years. Despite its name, it’s actually quite rare for goliath Birdeaters to prey on birds; their diet consists primarily of earthworms and toads.
