The shortest player in the history of the NFL was Jack ‘Soapy’ Shapiro. He was just half an inch over 5’, but despite his lack of height he became a professional footballer and played in the NFL for one season. He was born in 1907 to a family of immigrants in New York and attended New York University where he played college football, gained a scholarship and became a varsity letterman. In 1929, he played for the Staten Island Stapletons in an official NFL game against the Minneapolis Red Jackets, and was recognised in 1995 as the shortest player on record in NFL history. He lived to be 93 and died in 2001.
