The largest bird in the world is the flightless ostrich. It has a wingspan of 2 meters and despite the fact that they cannot fly, they are quick on their feet and can run at a speed of up to 70km/hr. These majestic birds have inspired a lot of cultures such as in Mesopotamia as well as in Egypt. Myth has it that ostriches do bury their heads in the sand. However, this is far away from the truth. Sometimes they bend their necks but this is only an attempt to appear less visible. Male ostriches are also vicious fighters when it comes to protecting the young ostriches.
