Istanbul in Turkey is currently the largest city in Europe in terms of population, and the fifth largest in the world. A third of the city’s population of 14.4 million live on the Asian side of the city. Since ancient times Istanbul has been one of the most important cities in the world. While, in more recent times, its population has increased by ten times since the 1950s, as migrants moved west looking for work in the Istanbul area. The total area of the city covers 2,063 square miles.
