The record for the youngest grandmother in the world is 23 years old – the age Rifca Stanescu was when she became a grandmother in 2011. A Romanian traveller, Stanescu is from the town of Investi in Romania. At the age of 12, she gave birth to a girl and named her Maria. Just 11 years later Maria had her first child, a son called Ion. To outsiders, this tradition of having children early may seem odd, but in the Romanian traveller community it’s a normal part of life. Indeed, Ion subsequently became engaged to a local girl at two.
